In keeping with VCN mandate in deepening the long-time partnerships with community non-profits, VCN continues to work with CFRO Vancouver Co-Op Radio. Technical interns work IT systems and Audio Technology/Electronics to gain hands-on experience.
In recent years, VCN and CFRO have provided quality placements for youth looking to build careers in audio technology. Other areas of focus include website development, and digital archiving and outreach.
Through the mentorship and support by CFRO staff and past VCN interns, placements have been perceived as a positive experience and inspired interns to continue advancing their careers in the IT sector. One successful placement was through the Womenin Technology Program, which strives to support the progression and empowerment of young women looking to gain knowledge and experience in IT field. Last year’s female intern said, “The youth internship program made my ambitions attainable instead of impossible. I feel I have come out of it with enough knowledge to be employable in my field.”
Not only does the YI Program aim to narrow the gap of the digital divide in communities, it also helped interns overcome the digital divide they have been experiencing, “I realized that I didn’t really know that much about technology,” she says. “I knew about the technology, but I didn’t know how to use it. The people that I’ve interned with have been really calm and understanding. These technical internships are really good because I get access to some of this technology.”
