Criteria for eligible Intern Host Organizations

  • An organization with legal status in Canada
  • Provide on-the-job training, orientation, and mentoring to interns to maximize their experience
  • Demonstration of appropriate administrative support and capacity to host the intern
  • Ensure that Youth Intern has email access as most communication from Coordinators is through the Internet
  • Provide adequate workspace and equipment to the interns

The potential to keep interns engaged after the internships (hiring them or offering collaboration contracts) – not a requirement, but a definite case for priority.

Eligible activities by Youth Interns can include but are not limited to:

  • software and video game development;
  • coding and app development;
  • network troubleshooting;
  • adaptive technologies;
  • website development;
  • web-enabled learning; and 
  • social media campaigns and other content development.

Note: Exposing the intern(s) to other work related assignments that will enhance marketable skills (such as marketing, finance, administration) to broaden their work experience is strongly encouraged.

Basic Requirements for Youth Participants under the Career Focus Stream

  • Youth must be between the ages of 15 to 30 (inclusive).
  • Youth must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident  or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Youth must have demonstrated skills achievement at the post-secondary level – this means that the participant must have more than secondary school achievement or entered university or college as a mature student.
  • Youth must intend to gain ICT skills and knowledge.
  • Youth must meet the job requirements of the IHO, which should include stated ICT-related activities
  • Not eligible are persons who are family members of employee of the IHO or VCN.
  • Youth cannot collect Employment Insurance benefits during their internship.

Priority will be given to youth facing employment barriers, Aboriginal people, members of a visible minority group, persons with disabilities, and women.

Note: Those who have already participated in the Youth Internship program are not eligible.

Hiring Process:

  • All internship openings will be posted by VCN on WorkBc.ca, the youth intern website (yid.vcn.bc.ca), workinnonprofits.ca, and other popular job boards.
  • All internship applications will go through VCN to ensure that the Industry Canada guidelines are respected.
  • Please allow at least 2 weeks for the job ad to be available to the public. Exception: If an intern resigns close to the end of the YI program, then a replacement may be hired immediately, if available.
  • If you wish to hire a youth from your volunteer pool, they must apply via one of the sites mentioned above and will be included in a shortlist of candidates if eligible. In order to maintain a fair, open, and transparent selection process, IHO’s will be expected to consider all candidates.
  • Please keep job descriptions as concise as possible: just job responsibilities and desired skills.
  • Time commitment was an issue with some interns last cycle. Most interns who resigned before completing their internships did so because they were students and had exams. If you decide to accept students as interns, it is advised to insist that exam and study schedules be figured out prior to hiring. VCN will also stress this aspect during orientation.

The purpose of YI program is to help youth build their ICT experience, skills, and knowledge to help them transition into the changing labour force. Please keep this in mind when drafting your job descriptions and requirements, and try if possible, to be flexible about work experience, if the youth is otherwise a good match for the internship.

Internship Guidelines:

  • Interns should work relatively regular hours, be that full-time (35h/week) or part-time (minimum 15h/week)
  • A standard internship is 650h (10h of which are allotted to workshops and orientation, and are also paid).
  • On a scheduled work day, the intern must work a minimum of 2h and can work a maximum of 8h (although 7h is the recommended daily). VCN will not compensate for overtime.
  • Interns who work remotely must report in their timesheets on the projects and tasks they completed.
  • The intern workshops are mandatory and part of the interns’ work contract, for up to 9h of the internship (+ 1h orientation class). Interns who refuse to attend will have their workshops hours transferred to other interns. Exemptions may be made in special situations.
  • Interns’ timesheets must be checked and approved by IHO Supervisors before the end of every pay period (all done online via Google Docs).
