The Vancouver Community Network owns, operates and promotes a free, publicly accessible, non-commercial, community computer utility in the Lower Mainland of BC which provides a public space on the Internet.

Job Summary:
As a Technical Support Specialist you would be working with other volunteers to provide technical support to clients via email, phone, and in-person. You will also work on technical projects related to programming, Linux server administration, or desktop administration. We are looking to hire a student for the summer.

BASIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
  • have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

JOB DUTIES:

  • Providing in-person, telephone and online technical support to individuals, non­profit groups, and sites hosted by the Vancouver Community Network
  • Providing training and support to entry level volunteers
  • Researching open source applications
  • Assisting with the installation and maintenance of Linux servers
  • Creating and updating service documentation

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent knowledge of Windows
  • Working knowledge of Linux and Mac OS X
  • Working knowledge of networks
  • Knowledge of Internet security is useful
  • Ability to configure and use various software programs
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English; additional languages are an asset
